HHS Extends Deadline to States to Submit Plans for Exchanges
The U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has extended the deadline for states to decide whether to set-up their own health insurance exchanges to December 14, 2012. States that are considering partnering with the federal government on exchanges will have until January 15, to declare their intentions. The extension will give states that delayed their decisions until after the elections more time. The original deadline was November 16, 2012. The HHS letter to the Republican Governors Association is attached.

Reminder - Chapter Medicaid Patient Advocacy Campaign
Now that the 2012 elections are over, ACP chapters are reminded to move forward on ACP’s Medicaid Patient Advocacy Campaign, which was initially unveiled to chapter leaders in September. This campaign gives you access to information, uniquely customized for your own state, to influence your state governments to accept federal funding to extend Medicaid coverage to your poorest residents.
The Chapter Action Plan that accompanies the Medicaid Patient Advocacy Campaign materials provides step-by-step instructions and a suggested timeline for implementing the campaign. Note that the suggested timeline for sending your state-specific report to your state Governors and your local media is November 12th - January 31th according to the action plan. We recognize that the timing for sending out these reports may differ in each state based on factors such as when your legislature convenes or changes in your state government.
Please be aware that 5 states (Indiana, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Washington State) will change governors due to the November 6 gubernatorial elections. The newly-elected governors are expected to be sworn in sometime in January, 2013.
You can access the chapter action plan as well as background information, customized state-specific reports and press releases at http://www.acponline.org/cln/medicaid_campaign.htm (Login required: accessible to Regents, Governors and Chapter Leaders only).
