International Meetings Update


9th Annual Educational Conference and Ethics Symposium of the Polish Society of Internal Medicine
March 24-25, 2010

The III Symposum "Ethical Dilemmas in Medical Practice - Should a Physician Have the Right to Create and Destroy Human Embryos?" was held in Warsaw, Poland on March 24, 2010 as part of the 9th Annual Educational Conference of the Polish Society of Internal Medicine. Dr. C. Christopher Hook, MD, FACP, was invited to participate in the Ethics Symposium as the ACP International Ambassador by Professor Andrzej Szczeklik, MD, FACP, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the meeting.

Attendance at the Ethics Symposium was approximately 300 and the audience was from institutions around Poland. There was interest from and reportage by the Polish press. Issues of stem cell research and IVF were debated. Dr. Hook had the opportunity to speak with many members of the Polish medical community about medical ethics and the value of this program to continue to improve education and care.



ACP Japan Chapter Meeting
April 10, 2010

Japan

The annual meeting of the ACP Japan Chapter was held on April 10, 2010 in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. David Gremillion, FACP, was invited as the ACP International Ambassador to the meeting. An enthusiastic group of approximately 200 physician, associate, and student members were in attendance. Dr. Gremillion facilitated a "Western Style Case Discussion" for ACP Associate and Medical Student members that was very well received.



Jornada Boliviana de Medicina Interna
May 5-7, 2010

The XXIII Curso American College of Physicians was held as part of the XI Jornadas Internacionales de Medicine Interna May 5-7, 2010 in La Paz, Bolivia. Dr. Guillermo Acuņa, FACP, was invited to speak as the ACP International Ambassador at the meeting by Dr. Jean Floru, FACP of the Sociedad Boliviana de Medicina Interna. Attendance at the meeting consisted of senior physicians, residents, and students from La Paz along with physicians from Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, and Sucre, Bolivia.



ACP Chile Chapter Meeting
May 10-11, 2010

The Chilean Chapter held its XLII ACP Annual Meeting in Santiago, Chile on May 10-11, 2010 with over 225 registrants. Attendees came from all over the continent, including Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Peru. Sessions at the meeting were aimed at updating different topics of interest for the general internist and general practitioner. Some of the relevant topics included new therapies in internal medicine, medical support to patients in surgery, professionalism, hospitalism, and medical education. There were also updates in cardiology, respitory diseases, endocrinology, hematology, nephrology, neurology, gastroenterology, and psychiatry. A round table about care at the end of life was held and another about internal medicine and other specialties such as ophthamology, otolaryngology and dermatology. Dr. Lawrence Smith, FACP, was the ACP International Ambassador to the meeting. Dr. Smith spoke on the topics "Medical Professionalism and the Generation Gap" and "Building New Medical Schools in the USA: A Revolution in Medical Education". His talks were well received. He also observed a students and associates session.

Dr. Guillermo Acuņa, FACP, received the ACP Laureate Award. The Chile Chapter also gave special awards to the following distinguished members: Dr. Verner Codoceo, FACP; Dr. Jorge Vega, FACP; Dr. Claudio Puebla, ACP Members; and Rodrigo Cruz, Chair of the ACP Chile Chapter Student's Council.

An Associate Poster Session was introduced and the 2010 winner received the ACP Indiana Chapter's award for the best poster in research. The winner was Dr. Luis Toro (pictured at right with Dr. Smith), ACP Associate and resident in internal medicine at the Clinic Hospital at the University of Chile. The award includes a sponsored trip to Internal Medicine 2011 in San Diego to present the poster.

Uruguay Internal Medicine Update Meeting
May 13-14, 2010

An Internal Medicine Update Meeting was help in Montevideo, Uruguay May 13-14, 2010. The meeting was sponsored by the Internal Medicine Society of Uruguay, the British Hospital of Montevideo, and the ACP Chile Chapter. Dr. Lawrence Smith, FACP, was invited to speak as the ACP International Ambassador at the meeting by Juan Carlos Bagattini, MD, FACP. The audience was made up primarily of practicing internists with a small number of residents and medical students. The meeting facilities were excellent. Dr. Smith had the opportunity to meet with the President of the local medical society and also had the opportunity to meet the attendees during the meeting.



ACP Venezuela Chapter Meeting
May 19, 2010

The Annual Meeting of the ACP Venezuela Chapter was held in Caracas, Venezuela on May 19, 2010 in conjunction with the Venezuelan Congress of Internal Medicine. Dr. Maximo Brito, FACP and Dr. Norman Wilder, MACP were invited to speak at the meeting as ACP International Ambassadors. Dr. Brito spoke on "Advances in the Treatment of the Septic Patient" and also provided an ACP Update presentation to chapter members. Dr. Wilder spoke on "Community Acquired Pneumonia" and "What I Wish They Taught Me As A Medical Student".
