8th National Educational Conference of the Polish Society of Internal Medicine
April 2-4, 2009
The Ethics Symposium and 8th National Educational Conference of the Polish Society of Internal Medicine "Advances in Internal Medicine - Interna 2009" was held April 2-4, 2009 in Warsaw, Poland at the Warsaw Palace of Culture and Science (pictured left). There were over 3,500 participants at the meeting.
Paul S. Mueller, MD, MPH, FACP (pictured right), was selected as the ACP International Speaker for the meeting by Professor Jacek Musial, MD, PhD, FACP, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the meeting and President of the Polish Society of Internal Medicine. Dr. Mueller presented "Assessing Professionalism Among Internal Medicine Residents: The Mayo Clinic Experience" to the Executive Board of the Polish Society of Internal Medicine and national and regional advisors in internal medicine to the Minister of Health. He also gave a presentation entitled "The Terri Schiavo Saga: Lessons Learned?" as part of a panel session. There were approximately 400-500 physicians in attendance at this session, which made for lively discussion.

ACP Japan Chapter Meeting
April 11, 2009
The annual meeting of the ACP Japan Chapter was held on April 11, 2009 in Tokyo, Japan. Attendance at the meeting was higher than in prior years, at an estimated 150-200 attendees, including approximately 50 medical students.
David H. Gremillion, MD, FACP, was invited to be the ACP International Speaker at this meeting by Akihisa Imagawa, MD, FACP, Program Chair. Dr. Gremillion presented a case study "Ichimoku Ryozen 2009" and also led a Western Style Case Discussion (WSCD) for ACP Associate and Medical Student Members that was well attended. Jeffrey P. Harris, MD, FACP, 2008-09 ACP President, served as the College Representative to this meeting.

25th Annual Meeting of the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand
April 25-29, 2009
The Royal College of Physicians of Thailand held its Annual Meeting April 25-29, 2009 in Pattaya, Thailand. The physician audience was made up of approximately 2,500-3,000 primarily Thai practitioners and academics. On Saturday, April 25th, a full day of medical topics were reviewed for those residents preparing for the certifying examination in internal medicine. As a result, a number of residents remained for the meeting as well.
Robert B. Gibbons, MD, MACP was invited to be the ACP International Speaker at the meeting by Prof. Somwang Danchaivijitr, MD, President, Royal College of Physicians of Thailand. Dr. Ian Gilmore, President, Royal College of Physicians of England and a Fellow of the ACP, was the keynote speaker at the meeting on the topic of setting higher medical standards for physicians. Non-Thai speakers included Dr. Hertzel C. Gerstein from McMaster University in Canada and Dr. Roger Williams from London. All of the other presenters on the program were Thai and conducted in the Thai language. An induction ceremony was conducted at the beginning of the meeting in full regalia for the new Fellows of the college.

ACP Chile Chapter Meeting
May 11-13, 2009

The ACP Chile Chapter held its Annual Meeting on May 11-13, 2009 in Santiago, Chile. There were over 200 attendees at the meeting. The physician audience was diverse, with doctors coming from Uruguay and even North Carolina in the United States. The educational sessions were aimed at updating different topics of interest for the general internist and general practitioner. Some of the relevant topics were: Sleep Disorders, Sports Medicine, Medical Errors, Diuretics, Professionalism and Hospitalism. There were also updates in gastroenterology, infectious diseases, endocrinology, geriatrics, and oncology, among others. There were also lunches with the experts and a round table about medical-legal clinical cases. During the meeting, Rodolfo Armas-Merino, MD, MACP and Guillermo Conte, MD, FACP, received the Laureate Award 2009 and a Special Award was given to Enrique Lopez-Caffarena, MD, MACP, as the first Governor of the Chile Chapter.

Robert G. Luke, MD, MACP, was invited as the ACP International Speaker to the meeting by Maria E. Pinto, MD, FACP, Governor, ACP Chile Chapter. Dr. Luke gave two Renal talks and two lunch seminars with many residents and medical students. Dr. Luke commented on how well run and well received the meeting was, noting that the ACP Chile Chapter is quite active. Dr. Luke also had the opportunity to make renal rounds at the University of Chile. Donald W. Hatton, MD, FACP was the ACP College Representative to the meeting.

Swiss Society of Internal Medicine Meeting
May 13-15, 2009
The 77th Annual Congress of the Swiss Society of Internal Medicine was held May 13-15, 2009 in Basle, Switzerland. There were several hundred attendees from all over Switzerland at the meeting.
Virginia L. Hood, MBBS, MPH, FACP, was invited as the ACP International Speaker to the meeting by the Swiss Society of Internal Medicine. Dr. Hood gave a keynote address about the future of general internal medicine and spoke on a panel about new modes of health care delivery where she discussed the Patient Centered Medical Home as a model of primary care delivery. She also had the opportunity to meet with past and present leadership of the Swiss Society, including current President Dr. Ulrich Buergi, past President Dr. Verena Briner, and Dr. Werner Bauer, President of the European Federation of Internal Medicine and Co-president of the Swiss Society of Internal Medicine
An ACP staff representative, Gloria Klaiman, was on site to demonstrate PIER and answer questions about the ACP.
ACP Venezuela Chapter Meeting
May 18, 2009
The ACP Venezuelan Chapter held its Annual Meeting on May 18, 2009 in Porlamar, Venezuela. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Venezuelan Society of Internal Medicine meeting which lasted until May 22. The subject of the meeting was Diagnosis and Treatment of Frequent Motives of Consultation in Internal Medicine. There were around 300 attendees at the Chapter meeting and an estimated 2,000+ physicians in attendance at the meeting the rest of the week.

George W. Meyer, MD, FACP, Governor of the ACP Northern California Chapter was invited as the ACP International Speaker to the meeting by Carlos A. Moros Ghersi, MD, FACP, Governor, ACP Venezuela Chapter. Dr. Meyer spoke on "Uncommon Causes of Chronic or Recurrent Abdominal Pain in Internal Medicinee - Clinical Conduct and Treatment". Other lectures were given on the following topics: Headache, Metabolic Syndrome, Fever, Functional Disorders, Syncope, Abdominal Pain, Pharmacologic Treatment of Pain, Lumbalgia, Edema, Hypertension, Vertigo and Dizziness, Anemia, Arthalgia, and Dyspnea.
Virginia L. Hood, MBBS, MPH, FACP, served as the College Representative to the meeting.
8th Congress of the European Federation of Internal Medicine
May 27-30, 2009
The 8th Congress of the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM) was held May 27-30, 2009 in Istanbul, Turkey. Attendance at the meeting was reported at around 1400. There were representatives from many countries who were members of the EFIM, including a large number of young people.

Jeffrey P. Harris, MD, FACP, ACP Immediate Past President, was selected as the ACP International Speaker for the Congress by Prof. Serhat Unal, MD, President of the 8th Congress of the EFIM and Immediate Past President of the Turkish Society of Internal Medicine. Dr. Harris spoke on the topic "Addressing Health Care Disparities, Changing Demographics and the Unsustainable System: Lessons the US can learn from other countries" during a symposia entitled "Internal Medicine: In the new Era of Quality and Cost Efficiency". Dr. Harris was also invited to participate in the Working Group on Professional Issues of the EFIM, where he spoke on steps the ACP took to revitalize internal medicine and the internist. He also participated in a panel discussion on the topic "Worldwide Problems in Internal Medicine" together with Dr. Werner Bauer, Switzerland, President of the EFIM; Dr. Napier Thomson, Australia, President of the International Society of Internal Medicine (ISIM); and Dr. Eduardo Gotuzzo from Peru.
ACP had an exhibit booth at the conference.
