International Meetings Update


27th Belize Medical and Dental Association International Congress
October 22-24, 2009

BMDA CongressThe Belize Medical and Dental Association (BDMA) held its 27th Annual Congress October 22-24, 2009, in Belize City, Belize. There were approximately 150 participants from all over Belize at the meeting, representing a diverse array of practitioners.

The three day congress was kicked off on Thursday, October 22, 2009 with opening ceremonies at the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts in Belize City and featured welcoming speeches by Ms. Kim Simplis-Barrow, wife of Belize Prime Minister the Honorable Dean Barrow, and by Dr. Jorge Hidalgo, President of the BDMA.

Robert Hyzy, MD, FACP, served as the ACP International Speaker at the meeting. Dr. Hyzy was selcted as a speaker by the ACP International Office Staff, along with Jorge Hidalgo, MD, FACP, President, Belize Medical and Dental Association. Dr. Hyzy is an Associate Professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. On Friday, Dr. Hyzy lectured on "Asthma", "Pulmonary Embolism", and "Patient Safety", the last of which included his experience as a leader in Michigan's groundbreaking Kesytone ICU program. The day's events culminated in a gala dinner at the Belize Biltmore Plaza, which included a buffet dinner, awards for service to BMDA and a cultural program consisting of performances by both Mexican and Garifuna dance troops.



8th Annual Scientific Meeting and 25th Anniversary of the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine
October 21-24, 2009

The 8th Annual Scientific Meeting and 25th Anniversary of the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine, held in conjunction with the ACP Ontario Chapter Annual Meeting, took place October 21-24, 2009, in Ottawa, Canada. The theme of the conference was Patient Safety Primum Non Nocerum.

The ACP International Speakers Program along with the CSIM and Janet M. Roscoe, MD, FACP, Governor, ACP Ontario Chapter selected Eric E. Howell, MD, FHM to serve as the ACP International Speaker at this meeting together with Stephen B. Deitezweig, MD, FACP.



6th Latin American Congress of Internal Medicine (SOLAMI) and the Peruvian Society of Internal Medicine 31st Internal Medicine International Course
October 28-31, 2009

The 6th Latin American Congress of Internal Medicine (SOLAMI) was held in conjunction with the Peruvian Society of Internal Medicine 31st Internal Medicine International Course October 28-31, 2009, in Lima, Peru. Around 2,000 physicians from several South American countries attended the meeting.

The ACP International Office Staff, along with Eduardo Penny, MD, FACP, President, SOLAMI, selected William Hall, MD, MACP, President-elect, International Society of Internal Medicine, as the ACP International Speaker to this meeting. Dr. Hall spoke on the topic of geriatrics. Kesavan Kutty, MD, MACP, was also an ACP International Speaker at the meeting. Dr. Kutty presented an update in pulmonology.
