ACP Awards and Masterships: Nominate Your Heroes, Mentors, and Colleagues
The Awards Committee of the American College of Physicians invites your assistance in recognizing the accomplishments of distinguished individuals and organizations through the College's awards and Masterships. Nominations are now invited for the 2009-2010 awards cycle, which will end with the College's bestowing a number of awards and Masterships during the Convocation ceremony at Internal Medicine 2010 in Toronto, Canada. These awards recognize outstanding contributions in the practice of medicine, teaching, research, public service, leadership, and medical volunteerism.
The Awards and Mastership Booklet, which has been updated for 2009-2010, contains criteria for the College's awards and Masterships plus detailed instructions for writing nominating and supporting letters. We are encouraging use of the online link to access and print copies. However, if you would like a print copy mailed to you, please contact staff as described at the end of this message.
For new nominations, five detailed supporting letters (no more, no less) and a current curriculum vitae with full bibliography are required. The deadline for all materials is July 1, 2009. In keeping with ACP's Diversity Policy, the Awards Committee requests that nominators consider a wide array of outstanding candidates including women, underserved minorities, other ethnic groups, and international members and colleagues. Nominees are especially welcome for the Loveland Award, Menninger Award, Rosenthal Awards, Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Teacher Award, Edwards Award, and the two new awards (see below).
Please note that only ACP Fellows may be nominated for Mastership and that Masterships as well as awards are competitive. That is, only a limited number are given each year, and the most outstanding are selected by comparison. Both Mastership and awards nominations should be handled confidentially, and individuals should not self-nominate. Also, please note that for Mastership, ACP involvement is expected, with rare exceptions.
Please note changes for this year's cycle:
- Limitation on the number of letters: Five letters (no more, no less) are required for the first year of consideration. If the nominee is not selected, the original package of five letters is reconsidered for a second and third year. It enhances the nomination if up to two additional letters (one from the nominator) plus an updated CV are sent in for each successive year. The two new letters should offer new information and/or a different viewpoint and not duplicate material from earlier letters. It is up to the nominator to arrange for additional letters and CV. These are optional, however, not required.
- New awards for diversity and for contributions in diabetes: The American College of Physicians Award for Diversity and Access to Care and the Samuel Eichold II Memorial Award for Contributions in Diabetes have been added to the list of ACP awards, and nominations are invited.
For questions, information about the status of nominations submitted previously, and a print copy of the Awards and Masterships Booklet, please contact Meghann Williams, Coordinator, Awards-Convocation and Diversity, at firstname.lastname@example.org, or by phone at 1-215-351-2714. Or you may contact Martha Cornog, Staff Liaison to the Awards Committee, at email@example.com, or by phone at 1-215-351-2696.
