From the Governor
Greetings from La Crosse. I hope your summer is off to a great start. Even though a lot of people are on vacation and out enjoying the summer weather, the national ACP remains extremely busy developing policy and advocating for its membership. On the state level our chapter is busy preparing for another State Scientific Meeting coming up in September. In this edition I will be highlighting some of the note-worthy items that have occurred on the national and state level in the past few months as well as looking forward to upcoming ACP dates/events.
National ACP News
Leadership Day:
The nineteenth annual ACP Leadership Day on Capitol Hill was held on May 24-25th. Our Wisconsin ACP chapter sent a delegation that met face to face with all of our Wisconsin congressional leaders. This is an important event during which the ACP is able to voice their opinions directly to congressional leaders regarding the most vital issues in medicine affecting ACP membership.
Several of the key issues that were emphasized this year were:
- Eliminate the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) and Transition to Better Payment Systems
- Key Discretionary Workforce Programs that Congress Must Preserve and Protect
- Key Mandatory Programs to Strengthen Access to Primary Care, Improve Quality, and Lower Costs
- Making Health Reform Better: Key Policies that should be Preserved, Improved, or Revised
Those attending this year from Wisconsin were:

Noel Deep, MD, FACP, Antigo
Matthew Crowe, MD, Madison
George Lange, MD, FACP, Milwaukee
Anthony Otters, MD, FACP, Milwaukee/Waukesha
Don Lee, MD, Milwaukee
Richard Dart, MD, FACP, Marshfield
Kesavan Kutty, MD, MACP, Milwaukee
Joshua Barocas, MD, IM resident at UW- SMPH, Madison
Daniel Harland, medical student – MCW, Milwaukee
Please keep in mind that you too can attend Leadership Day next year. All arrangements are made through our state chapter and the chapter defrays costs for attendees that go with our Wisconsin delegation.
National ACP Policy Highlights:
The national ACP office has issued several ‘positions statements’ this Spring. They include the following topics:
- “Five Prescriptions for Ensuring the Future of Primary Care.” (May 2011)
- “Medicaid and Health Care Reform.” (April 2011)
- “National Immigration Policy and Access to Health Care.” (May 2011)
All of these newly issued policy statements are available on the national ACP Web site
State Chapter News
We had 4 new fellows march in the convocation ceremony during the national meeting in San Diego. They are:

Robert T Adlam, MD, FACP, Milwaukee
Christopher Crnich, MD, FACP, Madison
Jaswinder Sidhu, MD, FACP, Wauwatosa
Lopa Kabir-Islam, MBBS, MD, FACP, Wausau
We held a ‘Wisconsin Reception’ at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel on Thursday evening during the national ACP meeting in San Diego. This was sponsored by the Marquette/MCW Medical Alumni Association. This was a very successful event and a chance for all attendees to network with other physicians from around the state.
The Health and Public Policy Committee from our ACP State Chapter was busy during the Spring advocating for Wisconsin ACP members and citizens of the state of Wisconsin, via letters to Governor Walker and key members of the state legislature in regards to health care policy.
