2007 Evergreen Award Winner!

Realizing that the strength of the American College of Physicians is grounded in the strength of the chapters, a program to recognize outstanding chapter efforts was created. The Evergreen Program provides visibility and recognition to those chapters that have been successful in implementing programs that increase membership, improve communication, increase member involvement and diversity activities, and foster careers in internal medicine. Each year all chapters are invited to nominate their own programs, and to provide details of why the program was initiated, how it was implemented, and what the results were. Over the last fourteen years, the Evergreen Awards Program has received over 400 nominations. The Chapters Subcommittee has the difficult task of selecting a small group of chapters which are recognized nationally and locally for their achievements.

The South Carolina Chapter received the 2007 Evergreen Award for the formation of an active Chapter Council of Associates. The South Carolina Council of Associates is comprised of internal medicine trainees from the state's residency programs for the purpose of promoting membership and active participation among Associates, enhancing communication among the three internal medicine residency programs, and encouraging the free flow of ideas from the associate members to the Chapter's Executive Council. Each internal medicine residency program elects a PGY-1, PGY-2 and PGY-3 representative to the Council and each subsequent year, each residency program replaces the recently graduated PGY-3 representative with a new PGY-1 representative. Members remain on the Council for the duration of their training to provide continuity. The Council meets once at each residency training location per year, for a total of three meetings each year, and discusses issues of importance and are brought up to date on Associate activities within each program. E-mail communication is also critical to obtaining input in planning the annual Associates Meeting and Abstract Competition. Other activities include recruiting student members and participation in ACP Leadership Day.
