New Governor Advocates for Physician and Practice Issues with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Rhode Island and UnitedHealth Care of New England

ACP Rhode Island Members:

Below is correspondence with the chapter with Blue Cross/Blue Shield and UnitedHealth Care of New England advocating for Internists to receive an increase in the fee schedule as well as a number of other priority issues. A response letter from Jim Purcell, President and CEO of Blue Cross of Rhode Island is also included. I think this continues the conversation. As Governor, I will periodically follow up with him for progress on the addressed issues. Electronic Medical Record adoption is a challenge (especially for smaller practices) and I hope the ACP can help in this effort.

The next step is to begin a conversation with United Healthcare to also "do the right thing". I have drafted the following letter to UnitedHealth Care of New England advocating for fair compensation for internists and their critical work citing the communitment Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Rhode Island made for regional parity in reimbursement. We hope to hear from Steve Farrell, CEO of United Healthcare of New England and report back to you shortly. I think we need parity within the state between insurers, both in terms of patient benefits and provider reimbursement.

Best Regards,
Nitin S. Damle M.D. FACP
