Governor's Bio and Vision Statement

Congratulations to our new Governor of the Rhode Island Chapter, Nitin S. Damle, MD, FACP. Dr. Damle has taken the place of Dr. Hennessey, starting his four year term as Governor in the April of 2007. Below you will find more details about Dr. Damle including his vision for the chapter.

DATE/PLACE OF BIRTH: July of 1957, Boston, MA;

EDUCATION: B.S. (Honors) University of Michigan, 1979 M.S. Pharmacology, University of Michigan, 1981 M.D. Wayne State University, Detroit, MI 1985;

POSTDOCTORAL TRAINING: Internship and Residency, 1985-88, Roger Williams Hospital, Brown University;

CERTIFICATION: ABIM 1988, Fellow, ACP 1993;

PRESENT POSITION: Private Practice of General Internal Medicine, Founding Partner, South County Internal Medicine Inc., Wakefield, RI 1988-present, Seven physician primary care practice; Consultant in Internal Medicine, University of RI Health Services, Kingston, RI 2000-present;

ACP ACTIVITIES: Council Member of RI ACP, 2004-present, Member, Education Committee of the RI ACP, Member, Promotion Committee of the RI ACP, National ACP "key contact" for national health care legislation, 2003-present; OTHER POSITIONS: Board of Directors of the Quality Institute of RI, (Organization charged with promoting improved health care in RI through the use of Health Information Technology) 2005-present, Council Member of the Rhode Island Medical Society and Member of the Bylaws Committee 2004-present, Advisory Board member to Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Rhode Island and United Health Care of New England 2005-present, Juror for the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology 2006-present, Physician advisor to eHealth Initiative, Washington, DC, A Health and Human Services initiative to promote the use of Health Information Technology, 2006-present, Member of the Board of Trustees of South County Hospital 2000-present, Member of the Governance Committee of the Board 2004-present, President of the Medical Staff of South County Hospital 2000-02, Chief of Medicine of South County Hospital, 1996-2000.

Vision Statement

  • Through the work of the ACP, foster high quality and efficient medicine
  • Promote the important role of internal medicine in preventing and treating complex and chronic medical conditions.
  • Advocate for access to affordable, quality healthcare for all patients.
  • Advocate for fair and socially responsible reimbursement that promotes an interest in internal medicine.
  • Promote health information technology with electronic medical records (EHR) and the statewide health information exchange. Implement "Stark legislation" changes for EHR adoption.
  • Evaluate pay for performance programs for accuracy and fairness in assessment and reimbursement for evidence-based medicine.
  • Support national efforts to fix the flawed Medicare SGR formula.
  • Promote membership advancement to fellowship for new and established internists.
  • Encourage participation by all members on committees, the council and advocacy groups.
