James R. Regan, MD, FACP earns Robert S. Pressman Award

HARRISBURG -- James R. Regan, MD, FACP, of Bethlehem, PA, was awarded the 2000 Robert S. Pressman Award for Distinguished Service to Internal Medicine, at the Pennsylvania College of Internal Medicine(PCIM) annual meeting in Harrisburg. The Pressman Award is given annually by the PCIM to that Pennsylvania internist who best demonstrates commitment to his patients and his community as a practicing physician, as a leader within organized medicine, and for extraordinary dedication to the specialty of internal medicine.

The Pressman Award is named for Robert S. Pressman, MD, FACP of Philadelphia, who served as President of the PSIM, President of the Philadelphia County Medical Society and a Trustee of the American Society of Internal Medicine. Pressman, was president of the American College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and Chairman of the Board of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. Dr. Pressman set a target for all physicians, in serving his patients and his profession with the greatest distinction. Dr. Pressman received the American Society of Internal Medicine's top honor, the Distinguished Internist of the Year Award in 1983. He shared personal responsibility for many achievements, including establishment of a Committee on Long Range Assessments and consideration by the Society of a Society-controlled HMO.

During his tenure, the PMS created KePRO, the Council on Medical Practice, the Hospital Medical Staff Section, the all member Risk Management Program, and the County computer network.

Dr. Regan graduated from Abington Senior High School and from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia in 1956. He served in a rotating internship at the Geisinger Medical Center and joined the United States Air Force, where he served as Chief of Medicine and X-ray officer at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma. After his service time, Regan served a residency in Internal Medicine, a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases and a Fellowship in Hematology at the Charlotte Drake Cardeza Foundation of the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He was certified by the American Board of internal Medicine in 1964 and recertified by the ABIM in 1977. He is Board Certified in Geriatrics and advanced achievement in internal medicine.

Dr. Regan entered private practice in internal medicine in Bethlehem in 1964 where he served Lehigh Valley patients until his retirement from active practice earlier this year. His practice combined general internal medicine and hematology. He jointed the staff at St. Luke’s Hospital as assistant chief of medicine in 1968 where he served for 15 years.

Throughout the past 30 years, Dr. Regan has taken on a leadership role in organized medicine, at the local, state and national level. A member of the Northampton County Medical Society and the American Medical Association, he became active in both the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Pennsylvania Society of Internal Medicine. An active member of the American College of Physicians, he served as a member of the Governor’s Advisory Committee for Eastern Pennsylvania for more than a decade, while at the same time, serving on the state liaison committee for Internal Medicine, the precursor of today’s PCIM.

In 1972, he was elected to the PSIM Council, and served four years as treasurer, two years as Vice President, and another two years as President of PSIM. He served a decade as editor of the PSIM Reports. He was elected as a delegate to the American Society of Internal Medicine for 25 years, and held national office as chair of the ASIM Therapeutics and Pharmaceuticals Committee from 1983-1987. From 1981 on, Dr. Regan represented the specialty of internal medicine and PSIM on the Interspecialty Section of the PMS.

With PMS, Dr. Regan chaired the Internal Medicine Advisory Committee from 1975-1980, and as the Internal Medicine delegate to the PMS House from 1979-1994. He has served as Chair of the PMS Task Force on Health Care Reform and Access, the Council on Governmental Relations, the Communications Committee, and the Blue Shield Issues Committee. Dr. Regan won election as the Interspecialty Section Trustee for the PMS Board of Trustees, and until October of 2000, served as chair of the Board of Trustees of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. He is currently vice chair of the PMSCO Board of Trustees.
