2008 Pennsylvania Chapter Western Region Abstract and Jeopardy Competition

Open to all Western Pennsylvania Residents who are Associate members of ACP's Pennsylvania Western Region. Additionally, medical students who are ACP members may enter abstacts for consideration.

Deadline for abstracts is August 30, 2008.

The Western Region’s Annual Abstract and Jeopardy competition will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. The day will include poster presentations, regional Medical Jeopardy (Doctor’s Dilemma) competitions, luncheon, and awards. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your talents and to meet informally with colleagues from other residencies in our region. Other benefits include:

  • Prize-winning entries will be placed on the PA Chapter’s Web site
  • Opportunity to win regional and national recognition
  • Winners in cases and non-cases to receive travel money towards trip to ACP's Internal Medicine 2009 Meeting in April in Philadelphia

Please remember this competition is open only to Associate and Medical Student Members of the ACP Pennsylvania Chapter's Western Region. There are three categories for abstract submission:

Research: All resident-directed research projects are welcome. Body of abstract must be limited to 400 words, broken into the following sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. See www.acponline.org/srf/abstracts/res_abs.htm for detailed instructions.

Case Reports: We welcome both the rare as well as the atypical presentation of the common diseases. Did you find it fascinating? Your colleagues may too! The body of the abstract must be limited to 250 words, broken into the following sections: Introduction, Case Description, and Discussion. Quality Improvement Projects: Working on a QI project to improve your hospital or address patient safety? Come teach your peers about it! Body of abstract should be limited to 400 words, broken into the following sections:

  • Brief description of context: relevant details of staff and function of department, team, unit, patient group
  • Outline of problem: what were you trying to accomplish?
  • Key measures for improvement: what would constitute improvement in the view of patients/clients?
  • Process of gathering information: methods used to assess problems
  • Analysis and interpretation: how did this information help your understanding of the problem?
  • Strategy for change: what actual changes were made, how were they implemented and who was involved in the change process?
  • Effects of change: did this lead to improvement for patients/clients – how did you know?
  • Next steps: what have you learned/achieved and how will you take this forward?

All work will be submitted electronically via the online abstract forms. There is a maximum of three submissions per first named author. Current Residents are eligible. All work must be completed while a resident. Abstracts exceeding the word limits will be disqualified. All accepted abstracts will be invited to present a poster at the November 8 regional meeting.
