Pennsylvania Chapter Eastern Region Abstract Competition

Save the Date: Saturday, November 22, 2008

To all Residents in the ACP Pennsylvania Eastern Region:

Abstracts can now be entered at the following Web site: http://residentmeeting.freehostia.com/upload_w_txt.html.

Jorge J. Scheirer, MD, is our point person at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center. When you submit your abstracts through the Web site, the data will be stored in a database. If you have any problems or questions about the abstract submission process, email Dr. Scheirer at scheirerj@readinghospital.org.

We want to stress that a resident must have an ACP Number to submit an abstract. The site will reject a submission that doesn’t have an 8 digit number, and will not accept “pending” or “none.” Nonmember residents are welcome to apply for membership and participate in the competition. Please do not submit your abstract until you have a valid ACP number.

Submission deadline is August 28. Only residents who are current Associate members of ACP’s Pennsylvania Eastern Region are eligible to submit abstracts. There are three categories for abstract submission:

Research: All novel resident-directed research projects are welcome. Body of abstract should be limited to 250 words, broken into the following sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. See www.acponline.org/srf/abstracts/res_abs.htm for detailed instructions.

Case Reports: We welcome both the rare as well as the atypical presentation of the common diseases. Did you find it fascinating? Your colleagues may too! The body of the abstract should be limited to 250 words, broken into the following sections: Introduction, Case Description, and Discussion. See www.acponline.org/srf/abstracts/clinvin_abs.htm for more detailed information.

Quality Improvement Projects: Working on a QI project to improve your hospital? Come teach your peers about it! Body of abstract should be limited to 400 words, broken into the following sections:

  • Brief description of context: relevant details of staff and function of department, team, unit, patient group
  • Outline of problem: what were you trying to accomplish?
  • Key measures for improvement: what would constitute improvement in the view of patients/clients?
  • Process of gathering information: methods used to assess problems
  • Analysis and interpretation: how did this information help your understanding of the problem?
  • Strategy for change: what actual changes were made, how were they implemented and who was involved in the change process?
  • Effects of change: did this lead to improvement for patients/clients – how did you know?
  • Next steps: what have you learned/achieved and how will you take this forward?

All submissions must be submitted online. There is a maximum of TWO submissions per first named author. All work must be completed while a resident. Abstracts exceeding the word limits will be disqualified. All accepted abstracts will be presented at the regional meeting. Scores from the blinded review and from the actual presentation will be combined to determine the final winners.

The top 4 abstracts will be presented orally at the meeting. Cash prizes will be given to oral presenters as well as the top scorers in each category.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at georged@readinghospital.org.

I hope to see you Saturday, November 22 at the competition. It will be held at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center.
