2009 Evergreen Award Winner

The Evergreen Awards Program provides an opportunity to recognize the valuable contributions of individual chapters as they strive to enrich, educate, and engage the membership. The Pennsylvania Chapter is pleased to announce that the Southeastern Region received the 2009 Evergreen Award for its Leadership Development Geared Toward Pennsylvania Southeastern Young Physicians program.

The Pennsylvania Southeastern Region has undertaken a multiyear program to allow interested young physician members to better use their leadership skills through three main components. The first component is a series of dinner programs, including time for networking. Each dinner/reception is centered on a discussion by a College Fellow or other key thought leader on a topic of leadership. The topics include improving lobbying skills for young physicians interested in influencing health policy at the state capital; success and ease of accomplishing ABIM recertification; person-to-person leadership skills in everyday practice; leadership skills for women—breaking the glass ceiling; and speaking to your state legislator and/or state senator face-to-face. The second component encourages young physicians to participate in chapter activities as well as ACP activities in leadership. Each year the chapter has identified a young physician who has personally demonstrated extraordinary leadership skills or has worked at the chapter level to promote leadership skills among his or her peers. The Chapter sponsored these individuals to attend the ACP presession workshop on Leadership at Internal Medicine 2009. Lastly, there was development of an on-line newsletter with topics on leadership geared toward young physicians.
