Stephen R. Jones, MD, MACP
Dr. Stephen R. Jones grew up on an Iowa farm, and still has close connections to his longstanding heritage, and a midwestern farmer’s strong moral code of hard work, impeccable manners, and a warm and gracious personality. He received his BA and MD degrees from the University of Iowa, and then ventured west for the first time to complete his internship at Harborview Hospital in Seattle. He then moved to Texas and completed residency and ID fellowship, and remained on faculty for several years at UT Southwestern. But his love of the Northwest drew him back, and in 1975 he joined the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center as Chief of the Infectious Diseases section and soon thereafter also became Vice Chair of Housestaff Affairs at Oregon Health & Science University. In 1980, he moved to Good Samaritan Hospital (later Legacy Health System), where he has been the Internal Medicine Program Director since that time and Chief of Medicine up to 2006 when he became Clinical Vice President of Internal Medicine. The eternal student, he wasn’t satisfied with specializing only in infectious diseases, but also received a Certificate of Added Qualification in geriatrics, and continues to be active in both infectious diseases and geriatric medicine. Dr. Jones has also served his community well, participating in such things as the Oregon Governor’s Elder Abuse Task Force, actively advocating for increased access to care, and regularly staffing residents and students at neighborhoodhealth clinics.
Dr. Jones has also been active in scientific inquiry throughout his academic career, starting during his training with a publication in the New England Journal of Medicine on sudden death in sickle cell anemia. His scholarly activity has broadened and deepened through the years, and he has published on such topics as treatment of venereal disease, hypothermia in the erythroderma syndrome, infections in frail older adults, and the “The Drenched Doctor,” his most recent publication in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Jones has presented his work regionally and nationally, and even as far away as Florence, Italy and Stirling, Scotland.
But those of us who know Steve well think of him first as a master teacher. He has the rare ability to blend remarkable clinical acumen with professional humility that makes him the quintessential clinician and patient advocate; and his tireless devotion to learners has influenced countless students and residents to choose him as their role model and mentor. He actively engages in the development of his learners, respectfully filling gaps in their knowledge and pushing them to excel. In addition, he is an innovative educator he implemented a behavioral medicine curriculum long before they were required, and he frequently uses resident feedback to craft new and innovative learning experiences. He has been honored frequently for his clinical teaching skills, including the Chief Resident’s Award and Oliver M. Nisbet Awards at OHSU, and the Howard P. Lewis Teaching Award of the Oregon Chapter of the ACP.
Steve has also had a lengthy commitment to the ACP, becoming an Associate Member in 1970, and a fellow in 1979. He served as Governor for the Oregon Chapter from 2002-2005, and while he was Governor, he was Vice Chair of the Ethics and Human Rights Committee for the national ACP, from 2002-2004. He has been honored by the ACP for his diagnostic reasoning skills by being invited to do “Medical Grand Rounds the Professor in Action” three times at Annual Sessions.
Through his intellectual curiosity, clinical expertise, and enthusiasm for teaching, Dr. Jones has been a role model for scores of medical students and residents, and impacted the care of thousands of patients. He has influenced policy, encouraged excellence, and led by example. Yet, when you meet him, you will see a sparkle of curiosity in his eye, the warmth of compassion in his smile, and an attitude of humility in his demeanor. He is truly the quintessential doctor.
