Richard W. Vilter, MD, MACP

Richard W. Vilter, MD, MACP is a Cum Laude graduate of Harvard University and an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of Harvard Medical School. After completing his internship and Junior Assistant Residency in Internal Medicine at the then Cincinnati General Hospital, he received Fellowship Training in Nutrition at Cincinnati General Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio, and at Hillman Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama. He then returned to the Cincinnati General Hospital to complete his Senior Residency and serve as Chief Medical Resident.

Doctor Vilter became a faculty member at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1941 at the Instructor level. Since that time he has held faculty appointments at every level obtainable from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor to Professor to Emeritus Professor. From 1956 to 1978 he was the Gordon and Helen Hughes Taylor Professor of Medicine and Director, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He currently holds the Gordon and Helen Hughes Taylor Professor Emeritus of Medicine Chair at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

His Visiting Professorships are too numerous to list and his clinical skills and erudite teachings are legendary. Doctor has held numerous national advisory, editorial, and administrative positions including such positions as Associate Editorship of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Chairman of the Hematology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health, Chairman of the Federated Council of Internal Medicine, and Presidency of the American College of Physicians to name just a few.

Doctor Vilter has received numerous awards including the following: Joseph Goldberger Award for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Nutrition from the American Medical Association, Dan Tehan Humanitarian Award/Physician of the Year from the National Foundation March of Dimes, the Daniel Drake Medal awarded for "major and lasting contributions to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and national and international reputation in his field," the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Golden Apple Award, the University of Cincinnati Award for Excellence, and the Medical Foundation of Cincinnati's Daniel Drake Humanitarian Award. The Cincinnati Society of Medicine and the Division of Hematology-Oncology of the Department of Internal Medicine, UC College of Medicine/American Cancer Society have established an Annual Vilter Lectureship and an Annual Vilter Cancer Symposium respectively in his honor.

Doctor Vilter is the author of over 120 scientific publications as well as numerous historical and literary club papers. The Ohio Chapter of the ACP-ASIM is extremely pleased and proud to present the 2002 Laureate Award to its former Governor and current Master, Richard W. Vilter, MD, MACP!
