The Program
The practice of Internal Medicine is very special. The challenge of clinical problems and close involvement with patients and their families facing those problems create a fulfilling professional life. Much of this is missed in hospital rounds, a small part of the story.
To work with a practicing internist whose primary responsibility is patient care gives another perspective to medicine. Over the summer between your first and second years of medical school, we invite you to spend 4 weeks with a specialist in Internal Medicine. The one-to-one relationship between student and physician allows the student to observe the internist’s relationship with his/her patients and their families, colleagues, and community. This is a realistic taste of the world of medical practice.
The preceptors have volunteered their practices for this project. A thorough program evaluation is conducted annually by surveying students and preceptors to continually improve the experience.
Goals and Objectives
The goal of the summer preceptorship is to provide an educational experience for New Jersey medical students and practicing internists working together.
The objectives of the program are:
- To demonstrate the importance of Internal Medicine in the spectrum of medical care
- To give students the opportunity to work closely with a practicing internist
- To give the practicing internist the opportunity to teach and better understand today’s medical student
- To encourage students to consider careers in Internal Medicine
Selection Criteria
- You must be a first year New Jersey medical student in good academic standing.
- You must be a Student Member of the American College of Physicians. Medical student membership in the ACP is free and you may apply online at: http://www.acponline.org/membership/join/medical_student/
