Frequently Asked Questions
What additional documentation is required to apply?
You must submit a letter from your medical school (eg, Dean's Office, Office of Student Affairs, or Registrar's Office) that affirms: 1)your status as a current first year medical student and 2)your coverage under your medical school's professional liability policy for this activity. Ideally this letter should be included with your application. Your application will not be considered unless we receive this documentation.
How are the participants chosen?
Once the application deadline has passed, a random rank order list of qualified applicants is generated. Students are then contacted in order of ranking and offered a position. You are usually given 24-48 hours to decide whether you wish to accept the offered position. Acceptance of a position is considered a professional obligation; please do not accept a position unless you are truly committed to participating in the program.
Do I get a choice of dates/location/preceptor?
Yes and no. We will do our best to accommodate your preferences. However, as positions are filled, choices become more restrictive as the number of available preceptors decreases.
How many positions are available?
The number of positions filled will depend upon the number of available preceptors and students. This year, the Chapter has funded a maximum of 20 student positions.
I am hoping to arrange for additional activities this summer. Can I accept a position on a part-time or extended-time basis?
No. You are expected to be available to work with your preceptor on a full time basis (Monday-Friday) during the four week block.
Will I receive academic credit for this activity?
The Summer Preceptorship is sponsored by the American College of Physicians; it is not an official medical school elective. However, your Dean's Office will be notified of your participation in the Preceptorship, and you will receive a Certificate of Participation from the Chapter upon completion of the program. It would also be quite appropriate to record this activity on your curriculum vitae and ERAS application.
When do I get paid?
You will receive your stipend check at the annual Preceptorship dinner, usually held in early September. If you are unable to attend the dinner, your stipend check and Certificate of Participation will be mailed to your Student Affairs office.
