Beth R. Nalitt, MD, FACP
Dr. Nalitt, a specialist in internal medicine, is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. She earned a medical degree from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia and trained there as a medical resident. She was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the Honor Medical Society, in 1984.
Dr. Nalitt was elected to fellowship status in the ACP in 1994. She serves as adjunct teaching faculty at UMDNJ since 1992 and Seton Hall University since 2006. She has served on the ACP council since 2005, and served as co-chair of the HHP committee since 2007. She is an avid supporter of the policies and practices of the ACP, serving as a summer preceptor for medical students since 2006 and attending Leadership Day since 2007. She is an attending physician at Barnabus Health and Overlook Hospital since 1996.
Since 2000, she has been practicing internal medicine at her private practice, Millburn Primary Care, in Millburn NJ where her specialty interests are Geriatric Medicine and Women’s health issues. Prior to being in private practice she served a s a clinical instructor for the medical residents at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair where her responsibilities included running the medical clinic, teaching rounds for residents and chairing the Morbidity and Mortality committee.
At the scientific meeting for the NJ Chapter of the ACP, Dr. Nalitt was presented the Laureate award , in recognition of her efforts on behalf of the ACP. Dr. Nalitt’s unique combination of working in the arenas of Academic medicine as well as operating a successful private practice gives her a unique perspective of the issues addressing internists, subspecialists and the ACP today.
Our goals for the ACP NJ chapter for the upcoming presidential election and beyond must revolve around providing quality healthcare to our insured and uninsured population. As a practicing internist who has owned and operated a small private practice in Essex County with one partner, I am appalled at the daily trials and tribulations of my uninsured patient population. Five minutes ago, a 59 year old uninsured female patient broke down in tears because she requires hospital admission and she does not know how she will handle the bills financially. As a member of the ACP council for the last 9 years and chairperson of the Health and Public Policy Committee for the NJ Chapter of the ACP, I have been active in attending Leadership day and speaking to local congressional representatives regarding this issue. The concept of the Medical Home, tort reform, relief of loans for medical students, financial support for small practices to implement EHR are some of the other issues I hope the ACP NJ chapter can lobby for in the coming years. I have spent summers training medical students from the UMDNJ system in my office (which has been a delight!) to impress upon them the importance of General Internal Medicine as a specialty. My hope is to continue my activities by running for the position of Governor for the Northern New Jersey ACP.

I consider it a privilege to be associated with The American College of Physicians (ACP) which is the premiere professional organization of internists. My vision for the ACP, both at the national as well as the chapter level, is in concordance with stated mission and goals of this excellent organization. We should strive to anticipate and respond to the needs of our members and the community we serve. The focus has to be on our mission to improve the quality of patient care and the productivity of health care delivery through the development and advocacy of creative planning initiatives as well as sound management decisions. It entails the development of a leadership team that sets a standard of excellence. We need to renew our commitment to enhancing the health of our community, providing superior services to our patients, delivering outstanding value, embracing clinical innovations, providing exceptional medical and health education, and supporting a diverse, knowledgeable, and caring group of medical professionals that constitute our membership. My special interest is in the area of medical education and, in particular, the rekindling of the passion for Internal Medicine amongst our medical students and residents.
