Nebraska Chapter Laureate Award - John C. Sage, MD, FACP
The Laureate Award honors those Fellow and Masters of the College who have demonstrated by their example and conduct, an abiding commitment to excellence in medical care, education, research, and service to their community, their chapter and the ACP-ASIM.
Recipients of this award shall bear the title Laureate of the Nebraska Chapter.
Awards shall be made at the Annual Scientific Meeting. The awardee should accept this recognition in person, unless excused by the Governor. The awardee is to be nominated by a process that may originate from the Awards Committee or any member of the Chapter. The nomination must document the attributes and accomplishments of the nominee.
Awardees are generally senior physicians, that is, Fellows for at least 15 to 20 years, with a long history of excellence and peer approval in the specialty of internal medicine. Exceptional circumstances may modify these requirements.
John C. Sage, MD, FACP, the son of a distinguished physician, has long shown those qualities of uprightness and excellence in practice recognized by his peers. He has served our community and state by his wise counsel as both Secretary and President of the Nebraska ASIM.
He graduated from Carleton College in 1952 and the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1956, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha as a distinguished alumnus. After his internship and two years in the Army Medical Corps, he became a resident in internal medicine at Temple University under the tutelage of Dr. Tom Durant, who subsequently became President of the ACP. Dr. Sage was certified by the ABIM in 1967, 1974 and 1980. His practice has been entirely in Nebraska, and he is now the senior physician at Internal Medicine Midwest, a division of Physicians Clinic. His colleagues elected him President of the Nebraska Methodist Hospital, which also honored him with their Distinguished Service Award. He also served the State Board of Medical Examiners for nineteen years, was its president for four terms, and was a member of the Federation of State Medical Boards and elected to its presidency, as well. He has been President of the Metropolitan Omaha Medical Society and had major roles in the Board of Health, the Nebraska Children's Home, the Immanuel Home, the Guarantee Life Insurance Company and others.
Dr. Sage currently is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. John and his wife, Ruth, have two sons. They enjoy bicycling together, as well as tennis and photography.
The Nebraska Chapter is pleased to honor Dr. John C. Sage for his high ideals and his many services to our community, our state and the ACP-ASIM.
It is with distinct pleasure that the Nebraska Chapter honors John C. Sage, MD, FACP, as our 1999 Laureate. We salute and honor him on this occasion, and we wish him well in the future.
