Casey J. Ryan, MD, FACP
Dr. Casey Ryan was born, grew up, and lives in Grand Forks, ND. He is one of five children of farmer/-businessman Jerry Ryan and Sanny. He graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1967 and went on to Colorado College where he graduated Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1971. He also starred in athletics, both in High School and College.
His undergraduate medical training was at the University of Colorado where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and AOA in 1975. His Internal Medicine Residency was at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine which he completed in 1978. He was awarded the Internal Medicine Travel Award as a resident. He passed his Internal Medicine Boards in 1978. Following Residency he spent a year at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand as a registrar where he focused on Endocrinology. Following that he returned to Grand Forks and joined the Grand Forks Clinic (now part of Altru Health System) as a staff physician.
While in Rochester, Dr Ryan met and married Beverly Brandt. They have five children.
He has been an active supporter of the ACP and became a Fellow in 1988. He was chair of the ND-ACP Annual Meeting Committee for 2005.
In addition to being an outstanding clinician, Dr Ryan has continued in a leadership role. He has been very active in teaching at the UND School of Medicine. At UNDSoM he has received teaching awards and served as an Assistant Dean. He has been very involved with the Diabetes Societies and served as the President of the ND Affiliate, ADA both in 1984-5 and 1994-5. Most prominent is his leadership in the Grand Forks medical community. He was a Board of Directors member and President of the GFC on several occasions. He has served as the President of the Altru Health System since its inception in 1997.
For his leadership, personal qualities, and service to the ACP and the patients of North Dakota we feel Dr Ryan is an outstanding recipient of the ACP's Laureate Award.
