Governor’s Message

Governor Julie Blehm

Thank you, Jim, for your leadership of our chapter over the last four years. Under your guidance we received several Chapter Excellence awards and two Evergreen Awards. Jim also began the community service awards. I want to thank both Jim and Pam Heisler for all of their assistance as I try to figure out all my new position involves.

I want to ask for input from all of you for future newsletters. It would be fun and interesting if any of you were interested in being guest columnists in a future newsletter. I would also appreciate information from all of you about what is going on around the state in Internal Medicine - news about our members, programs that may be occurring or other news. We would also appreciate any suggestions for American College of Physicians Chapter programs that may make ACP more relevant in your daily practice.

The ACP Internal Medicine 2011 was held in San Diego April 7-9. I was privileged to have 3 new fellows participate in convocation – Cory Miller, Williston, ND, Darin Lang, Fargo, ND, and Neville Alberto, Fargo, ND. We had multiple ACP members attend the meeting. I believe all would agree that is was again an excellent educational event. The location was hard to beat – San Diego is a lovely place to visit.

Annual Meeting

The annual meeting will be held in Fargo, ND on September 30, 2011 from 7:30 am to 4 pm at the UND medical education center. Dr. Neville Alberto and Dr. Darin Lang are the co-chairs for the program. The brochures will be going out soon. We will have a luncheon again this year and not have a dinner the evening before. I think you will all agree that it is a very interesting program which applies to both the hospital and clinic sides of internal medicine and subspecialty areas. We would like to have the meeting in Bismarck or Minot in the next year or two. I would need a program chair from one of those communities. Please let me know if you are interested.

Leadership Day

Dr. Darin Lang will be attending Leadership Day in Washington, DC in May of this year. The ND ACP chapter would like one or two physicians representing us each year in Washington, DC for Leadership Day. It is usually in May and we pay for air fare and hotel. Please let myself or Pam Heisler know if you are interested in representing us in May 2012.

Feedback Requested

I am interested in beginning an educational webinar series. When I was at a chapter networking meeting in San Diego, the ACP governor from one of the Illinois chapters presented her implementation of a CME webinar series. She had 4 per year that were available to ACP members free of charge. They were each one hour long and were held from 5 – 6 pm. Pam and I have visited with our chapter staff about this and feel we could afford the webinar cost if we can enlist the help of our physicians to present on a topic.

Would you be interested in a
CME webinar series?

If interested, what times would be best? I was thinking 7-8 am or 5-6 pm but please let me know what would work best for you. Please respond to myself (Julie.Blehm@sanfordhealth.org) or Pam Heisler (PHEISLER@altru.org) with your feedback.

I am attaching several links to articles that I thought were excellent. Two are from the NY Times]. The first is by Paul Krugman titled “Patients are not Consumers.” The second is an editorial on Physician, Heel Thyself
