Van L. Lackey, MD, FACP

Dr. Van Lackey was the Laureate Award Winner for Mississippi. Dr. Lackey was born September 5, 1946, in Jackson, Mississippi. He received an undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Ole Miss in Oxford and then attended the University of Mississippi Medical School in Jackson graduating in 1972. He did an Internal Medicine Residency and then his Hematology-Oncology Fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. During his last year he was an American Cancer Society Fellow.

He entered private practice with Dr. Guy T. Gillespie, Jr., in 1977 and formed Jackson Oncology Associates, the largest private practice oncology group in Mississippi. He is, also, presently Medical Director of the Hederman Cancer Center in Jackson.

He is active with the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and is on the Clinical Staff, is a member of the Guardian Society, and is Past President of the University of Mississippi Medical Alumni Association where he also serves on the Board of Directors.

Dr. Lackey belongs to numerous organizations including the MS State Medical Society, American Society of Hematology, and the Southern Association for Oncology. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and serves on the Clinical Practice Committee. He organized the MS Society of Oncology and has served as President since 1991. He has been a fellow of the American College of Physicians since 1992 and served as Governor for Mississippi from 1997-2001.

Dr. Lackey's career in oncology has helped set the standards for his specialty in Mississippi. His accomplishments as a leader as well as his service to the Mississippi medical community and the American College of Physicians make him truly deserving of the honor of Laureate of the Mississippi Chapter of the American College of Physicians.
