Volume 9, Number 2

MERGER OF MISSOURI CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND MISSOURI SOCIETY OF INTERNAL MEDICINE

The Councils of the Missouri Chapter of the American College of Physicians and the Missouri Society of Internal Medicine met together on October 15, 1998. The principal purpose of the meeting was to complete the merger of these organizations. Each Council unanimously approved the merger to become the Missouri Chapter of the ACP-ASIM. They then turned their attention to developing Bylaws for the Chapter.

ACP-ASIM National Headquarters had provided model chapter bylaws and these were revised to meet the needs of the Missouri Chapter. After revision, the model bylaws were approved unanimously by the Combined Councils, in compliance with the current Bylaws of the Missouri Chapter of the ACP and the Missouri Society of Internal Medicine. The next steps are (1) to obtain legal review to ensure that the new Bylaws comply with Missouri law and with ACP-ASIM requirements, (2) to obtain approval by ACP-ASIM, and (3) to file the approved Bylaws with the Secretary of State. The legal review is in process.

After approval by the ACP-ASIM, the revised Bylaws will be published and available for distribution to the membership. Anyone who would like to receive a copy of the Bylaws should send their request to Richard B. Whiting, MD, FACP, who will assume his role as Governor of the Missouri Chapter of the ACP-ASIM in April 1999. Dr. Whiting's address is St. Mary's Medical Center, 6420 Clayton Road, St. Louis, MO 63117. His phone number is (314) 768-8778, his fax number is (314) 768-7101, and his e-mail address is richard.whiting@medcast.com.

The new Bylaws also will be available to the membership at our annual meeting at Tan-Tar-A, September 10-12, 1999. The Councils hope everyone will read the new Bylaws to ensure that they meet the needs of the Internists of Missouri. We anticipate that they will be regularly reviewed and revised. HISTORIC BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEETING HELD IN CHICAGO

by Warren C. Lovinger, Jr., MD, FACP

The newly merged ACP-ASIM had its first Board of Governors meeting in Chicago, Illinois on September 24th to 27th, 1998. Missouri was well-represented at this meeting by: Coy D. Fitch, MD, FACP, Missouri Governor; Warren C. Lovinger, Jr., MD, FACP, Missouri Transitional Governor; Richard B. Whiting, MD, FACP, Missouri Governor-Elect; and, Sara E. Walker, MD, MACP, ACP-ASIM Regent.

The format of this historic meeting was modified to include more discussion and debate regarding resolutions brought before the group. Particularly interesting topics included proposed establishment of a Political Action Committee (PAC) for the ACP-ASIM, dues structure and requirements, and involvement of Internal Medicine colleagues from other parts of this hemisphere.

The collegiality and friendly debate promoted at this meeting led everyone in attendance to agree that it was a great success. It was clear that this meeting format would promote a responsive, grass-roots oriented national organization for the ACP-ASIM.

1998 ACP-ASIM REGIONAL MEETING

Registrants from across the state attended the 1998 Regional Meeting held at The Lodge of Four Seasons on October 16-18, 1998. The meeting included a day-long subspecialty update on Geriatric Medicine, discussions of management of menopause, type 2 diabetes in the elderly, office assessment of the older patient, ethics and the older person, pressure ulcers, dementia and depression. ACP-ASIM representative, Robert B. Doherty, spoke on "Health Policy and Congress: A Report Card and Predictions for the Future," ACP-ASIM representative, Carl B. Cunningham, spoke on "Successful Practice: Popular Myths and Practical Tools," and College Representative, Sara E. Walker, MD, MACP, spoke on "News and Views from College Headquarters." Dr. Walker's talk stressed the importance of Membership and Fellowship as well as the number of beneficial services that the College provides for all members.
