ACP Honors Missouri Chapter with 2008 Evergreen Award

At Internal Medicine Week 2008, ACP presented Evergreen Awards to honor Chapters that created new programs that strengthened the chapter and increased member communication and involvement.

The Missouri Chapter received the 2008 Evergreen Award for Multifaceted Medical Student Involvement Program. Here is a brief description of the chapters' effort.

The Missouri Chapter developed a multifaceted medical student initiative with the goals of increasing student participation in chapter activities, providing structured student representation on the council, and facilitating the expansion and growth of internal medicine interest groups in the six medical schools in the state of Missouri. The chapter initially targeted specific events for enhanced student participation: Leadership Day in May 2007, Internal Medicine in April 2007, and the Missouri ACP chapter meeting in September 2007. Then, the Council approved the formation of a student council that would have a permanent seat of representation, and student representation from each school at each council meeting was also encouraged. In addition, two student sessions would become a permanent component of each annual chapter scientific meeting: 1) a student luncheon (attended by the Governor), with their own selected presentation; and 2) student Jeopardy, with teams competing from each of the six schools. Medical students are now an integral part of the council and membership, actively participating in the planning and implementation of chapter meetings and other activities. They are also invaluable means of recruitment for active members as well as students.
