Vision Statement
After 13 years in private practice, I was attracted back into academic medicine in 1990 for the opportunity to emphasize bedside teaching and exam skills at UMKS/Truman Medical Center, Kansas City. This included 2 months every year attending on General Internal Medicine inpatient service, and once weekly a General Medicine outpatient clinic. Last May, 2009, as I walked around the Hill in Washington, DC on Leadership Day with 4 other internists, one IM resident, and 3 medical students, I was stuck with my core values: I am an Internist at the center of my Being. We need to improve the plight of the practicing primary care doctor. We must rejuvenate the enthusiasm for training in General Internal Medicine, improve the morale of the practicing Internist, and reform the payment formula for time spent in competent, coordinated patient care. I am ready, able, and willing to work on these issues through ACP.
