Women in Medicine Subcommittee
The American College of Physicians recognizes and respects women for their contributions to internal medicine and primary care, as well as their subspecialties. The Maryland Chapter acknowledges and appreciates the substantial differences in the needs of female physicians and their dual role, as healthcare specialists and family caretakers during all phases of their career: medical school, residency, fellowship, professional practice, and retirement. With that in mind, the Women in Medicine Subcommittee was organized in December 2004 to address the many and varied needs of female medical students and physicians within Maryland.
Nationally, women account for about 30% of overall College membership and 42% of Associates. Fifty percent of medical students and almost 30% of practicing physicians are women. These numbers are continuing to increase. We need continued growth in organized and academic medicine, particularly in key leadership positions, in order to "change the face of medicine" to one that is more aligned with our dual role as physicians and primary caretakers of our families. (For more perspective, please see the Annals of Internal Medicine articles found in the helpful resources section.)
The mission of the WIM Subcommittee is as follows:
- To provide a forum for networking and mentoring among female physicians and medical students during all phases of their training and career.
- To increase the number of female physicians in leadership positions.
- To explore professional options to sustain and nurture the balance of professional and personal responsibilities.
- To increase membership and participation in organized medicine.
We are proud to note that the Maryland Chapter has won an Evergreen Award two times for initiatives for women in medicine. Evergreen Awards are given to chapters that have created new programs which strengthen the chapter and increase member communications and involvement. In 2006 our chapter received an Evergreen for our "Part-Time and General Contract Negotiation for Women" program, and in 2007 we won for our "September is Women in Medicine Month - Annual Conference."
This Web site is open to everyone. However, we encourage membership in ACP as a way to increase participation of women in organized medicine, and as future Fellows of ACP. Furthermore, as members of ACP, we are able to secure your connection to our forum in order to prevent your e-mail account from being spammed.
We meet three to four times a year and vary locations to accommodate members living in different areas. We are always looking for new members for the Planning Committee. We are a diverse group and need your participation to ensure diversity of viewpoints, as well as to help plan and execute goals for meetings and events. It does not matter whether you are in practice, retired, medical students, or residents/fellows - you are wanted. If you are interested in becoming involved with the Planning Committee or if you need assistance with WIM issues and resources, please contact Claudia Kroker, MD, PhD, FACP.
We are here to support you, but we need to hear from you!
Thanks!
