The ACP Maryland Chapter has a Volunteerism Group in order to highlight the volunteer activities of our members, as well as help members search for volunteer activities they might like to become more involved in. Our goals are to disseminate information on volunteer activities in order to support our members and encourage other members to start volunteering.
One of the main reasons people enter the medical profession is a desire to improve the health and well-being of others. In fact, volunteering exemplifies the calling of medicine, and provides opportunities to gain clinical expertise including problem-solving, strengthening of communities in need, and improving the lives of patients and connecting to others in a lasting and meaningful way. The medical evidence also supports a strong relationship between volunteering and lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life – Volunteers Live Longer!
Given all of this, we ask for your help in making this a success! We plan to feature a MD ACP Volunteer Profile periodically on the Chapter Web site. In order to do this, we need volunteers to contact us as soon as possible if they are willing to complete a brief interview for a Volunteer Profile.
Please email Dr. Linda Lee or Dr. Regina Gan-Carden with your name and phone number, current volunteer activity, and best time to contact you. Of course, volunteers will be able to review their profile prior to posting for their approval.
Secondly, we want to encourage our MD members to volunteer and are letting you know about the ACP’s Volunteerism Subcommittee. Their Web site has a wealth of information about opportunities and resources and facilitates choosing activities specific to your interests. If you are interested in finding out more about domestic and international opportunities currently available, please go to the Web site and complete the Volunteerism Network Data Form.
Thanks for your support of the MD Volunteerism Group!
