Eugene Shenderov

Eugene Shenderov is a third year medical student in the MD-PhD Medical Scientist Training Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has a long-standing passion for addressing local community and global health issues that predate his attendance at Hopkins. While pursuing a PhD in tumor immunology as a Rhodes Scholar in a joint doctoral program at the University of Oxford and the National Institutes of Health, he helped organize a National Youth Leadership Summit on “Innovative Solutions to Healthcare in Low-Resource Settings” that was held in New York City and attracted over 700 university students and young professionals throughout the US and abroad.

As a member of the Baltimore community, Eugene has witnessed first-hand that many low-income residents of Baltimore face significant health disparities and lack access to healthcare. He and a group of his fellow Johns Hopkins medical students decided to act. They founded the Charm City Clinic, Inc, a 501 (c) non-profit organization, to reduce health inequities by helping East Baltimore residents access high quality health care and social services. Since March 2010, the Charm City Clinic has served approximately 350 individuals, helping them enroll in medical assistance and health-related social services, providing preventive screenings for hypertension and diabetes, and conducting neighborhood-based outreach programs.

This year, medical students from Maryland have started volunteering at CCC in large part due to Eugene’s efforts to ensure that students from across our area participate in such an important and useful endeavor.

Eugene also serves as co-chair of the MD ACP Student Committee where he is active in a number of different programs from participation in the Community Health Care Initiative, Student Dilemma and a student mentoring program.

Eugene’s tireless devotion to the underserved of Baltimore is inspirational. The amount of effort it took to even open the clinic underscores the commitment Eugene and his fellow students have to our community. Eugene and his fellow students did not just “talk the talk,” they “walked the walk.”

It is with pleasure that we recognize Eugene Shenderov for this year’s Mackowiak Student Achievement Award and we applaud him for his current accomplishment as well as his future activities as he continues his career in medicine
