2012 Samuel P. Asper Award for Excellence in Internal Medicine

sheikh

Saba S. Sheikh, MD, FACP

Dr. Saba Sheikh graduated from the Fatima Jinnah Medical College for Women, University of Punjab located in Pakistan in 1984. She then completed her residency at the Sisters of Charity Hospital, State University of New York at Buffalo, New York in 1993. She was Board Certified in Internal Medicine in 1996, recertified in 2006 as well as becoming a Fellow of ACP.

Dr. Sheikh began her career as part of a multispecialty practice until 1999. It was at this time that she established her own private practice which she managed on her own with a very small staff. She established an EHR system that was used in her office for over 10 years, contracted on her own with insurers in the area, developed her own financial system to manage her practice, and was even able to participate in the Medicare pay for performance program while establishing office systems, policies and procedures including HIPPAA compliance.

While working in a solo practice, Dr. Sheikh also became very much involved with the local ACP Maryland Chapter, serving as a member of the chapter's Women in Medicine Committee, Health & Public Policy Committee, the Chapter Council, and as our representative to the Medicare Carrier Advisory Council for a number of years. She has also been very active as a member of the MedChi State Medical Society serving as one of our advisors to their Legislative Committee, where along with Dr. Mary Newman she represents the voice of internal medicine for the Maryland Chapter.

Dr. Sheikh has been an inspiration for both women and men in that she has taken care of her patients through her dedication to and love of medicine. She has been able to ensure that her patients' needs and concerns are addressed and met, and has been an important member of the Columbia area where she practices and lives.

In this day when most physicians seek the support of a large multispecialty practice, Dr. Sheikh was able to efficiently run and manage her own office for over ten years. This certainly follows in the footsteps of Dr. Samuel Asper who practiced and worked in an era when most physicians were solo entities using their own initiatives and skills to manage their offices.

Dr. Sheikh is certainly more than deserving of the Samuel Asper Award, and we congratulate her for this award and her dedication to her patients and her community.
