2011 Philip Mackowiak Student Achievement Award

Evan Russell

Evan Russell graduated from Brown University in 2006 and is currently enrolled in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Evan has clearly been devoted to community service during his entire scholastic career, including his work with the Minority Association of Premedical Students at Brown University, where he organized health fairs for the local community and mentored minority medical students, as well as his work through the University Disability Support Services.

Evan has been a member of the Maryland community for the past three years where he has extended his efforts not only locally but on an international level including his work with Empowerment Health, a non profit dedicated to improving child and maternal health in Afghanistan through community-based health care.

Evan served as a member of the Maryland Chapter Student Committee as well as the Co-Chair of the Community Care Initiative, an event connecting underserved Baltimore City residents with health and social services that is held at the Israel Baptist Church in the East Baltimore area. This fair grew tremendously not only in attendance but in reaching out to residents in this underserved area. As a member of the ACP Student Committee, Evan along with a fellow student introduced a resolution to the Maryland chapter which was presented and approved at a national ACP Board of Governors meeting and resulted in the ACP Health Policy Internship Program.

Dr. John Flynn writes in his letter of nomination: “On a personal level having known Evan for the past three years, he is an absolutely delightful individual who is the ultimate team player in providing support to his medical student colleagues. He is a model to be emulated by other medical students and will clearly be a leader among physicians upon graduation. The American College of Physicians will only heighten their stature by recognizing such a remarkable individual.”

The Maryland Chapter certainly agrees with the statements made by Dr. John Flynn and is very pleased to be given the opportunity to have had Evan participate in our student and Chapter activities.
