Maryland ACP at Work for You!
During the last six months, several changes have occurred to our Maryland ACP Chapter. Dr. Philip Mackowiak, our Governor for the last four years, who was able to accomplish so much for all aspects of internal medicine completed his tenure in April 2006. Some of these activities included the development of several new Subcommittees including Students, Women in Medicine and Hospitalist as well as continuing the programs of our former governors including the Mulholland-Mohler Associates meeting and a dynamic Scientific meeting that is geared to our practicing clinicians.
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Mary Newman, our first woman Governor, who is in private practice in Lutherville, Maryland as part of the Park Medical Associates. In her short time as Governor, Dr. Newman has also begun the process of developing additional subcommittees to ensure that all of our many, varied members can participate in our Chapter activities.
Here are just of the few of the activities, we have participated in during the last six months:
In January, held the first Baltimore metropolitan "ACP on the Road" program geared for the practicing clinician. The theme of this meeting was the new Pay for Performance Standards and was presented by Dr. Michael S. Barr, Vice President, ACP Practice Advocacy and Improvement. Over 60 physicians registered for this meeting which provided up-to-the minute information on these standards as envisioned by the Federal government.
In February, hosted one of our largest scientific meetings with over 220 physicians registered from a variety of internal medicine areas including students to retired physicians. Also held the Doctors Dilemma contest that includes teams from all area residency programs, as well as students from University and Hopkins.
In March, hosted the first meeting of the newly formed Hospitalist Subcommittee. Dr. Fred Chan, a hospitalist from GBMC, chairs this subcommittee for our Chapter. One of the goals of this subcommittee, will be to increase communication among hospitalists at area hospitals, as well as practicing clinicians. If you are interested in participating in this subcommittee, please email our Chapter staff person, Maryellen Woodward, at mew4work@aol.com.
In April, Drs. Newman, Mackowiak as well Maryellen attended the ACP National Scientific meetings held in April 2006 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Maryland and DC Chapter hosted a reception for all those in attendance from this area. The Maryland Chapter also subsidized the expenditures for several residents from our Chapter who participated in the national Doctors Dilemma contest and the ACP Associate meeting abstract competition. These residents had been the "winners" of the 2005 Doctors Dilemma and oral abstract competition in Maryland. Drs. Regina Gan-Cardin and Sapna Kuehl, co-chairs of our Maryland Women in Medicine Subcommittee also participated in the national ACP program by assisting with presenting workshops on "women in medicine" as well as practice negotiations information.
We are very pleased that for the second year our Maryland ACP also was awarded an ACP Evergreen Award for the activities of our Women in Medicine Subcommittee. Congratulations to all those who participated in our national meeting.
In May, several activities occurred almost simultaneously. The ACP Leadership Days were held on May 16-17 in DC. Six members of our chapter spent the day in Washington, DC meeting with our Congressional delegation to let them know the concerns of medicine in Maryland and across our country. We are pleased that we had a very diverse delegation consisting of not only practicing clinicians but administrators and even a Chief Resident from University of Maryland.
On May 18th, we hosted the Mulholland-Mohler Associates meeting. This is an all day event with abstract submitters from all area hospitals, as well as students from our local universities. This year's competition included over 150 submissions in a number of categories including oral, research papers, and clinical vignettes. Over 30 judges from area hospitals assisted with reviewing each abstract. We were also pleased that several musical selections from students and area residents were also presented. As part of the day's events, the C. Lockard Conley award is presented for exceptional activities in the area of resident education and research. This year's winner was Dr. Stephen D. Sisson, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins University who helped to develop a curriculum in ambulatory care delivered over the Internet which is used by programs nationwide. We also were very pleased to have Dr. John Tooker, CEO, of the ACP as our Associates Distinguished Lecture for 2006.
To round out May, the Women in Medicine Subcommittee hosted a contract negotiations seminar attended by over 40 women in the field of internal medicine. This group included not only practicing women clinicians, but also students and residents who will need expert advice in the area of contract negotiation as they negotiate for jobs and placement in our area. Representatives from a legal firm from Philadelphia were kind enough to join us for this meeting and provide sound and practical information on the best way to negotiate a contract.
In June, our Awards Subcommittee chaired by Dr. Harold Standiford has been very busy developing a list of nominees for submission to the ACP for review this summer. Dr. Sapna Kuehl was also appointed chair of our newest subcommittee, the Young Physician Subcommittee for those physicians defined as a physician member of ACP who is within 16 years of graduating medical school. The mission of this subcommittee will be to enhance the professional development and quality of life of young physicians, fostering their involvement in College activities and ensuring that their needs are met. Plans are to host the first subcommittee meeting sometime in July.
If you are interested in this subcommittee or any of the activities mentioned above, please do not hesitate to contact our Chapter Staff person, Maryellen Woodward, mew4work@aol.com. or 410-332-8444
These are just "highlights" of the activities your Maryland Chapter has been involved with during the last six months. We hope that you will keep us in mind should you want to become more involved in internal medicine activities.
