The Westside Community Health Fair
The Indiana Chapter has cosponsored and coordinated the Westside Health Fair for the past 4 years, with the help of the Medical Student groups. The Westside Health Fair aids a medically underserved neighborhood. The elected Internal Medicine Student Interest Group officer started planning by contacting leaders of the Student groups and establishing an organizational structure of responsibilities, including fund raising, advertising, and recruiting volunteers. Each Student group sponsors several booths and responsible for researching its topics, providing handouts and giveaways, and preparing an informational display. Student volunteers trained in the use of glucose and cholesterol monitors, vaccine administration, and blood pressure measurement and staffed the booths. In 2002, the Health Fair had 23 booths covering such topics as osteoporosis, polypharmacy, adult immunization, and domestic violence. The Health Fair, which was organized completely by medical students, has become one of the largest medical student volunteer events at Indiana University and is developing leaders in the field of internal medicine.
