2005 Evergreen Award Winner
Publication of Indiana Associate Abstracts
The Associates Council of the Indiana Chapter undertook a needs assessment to analyze what areas they needed to improve upon. The abstract competition was determined to be an area of potential improvement. They recognized that the participation level in the abstract competition was low because residents were deciding in greater numbers to pursue subspecialty training, and were therefore directing their scientific efforts to subspecialty meetings because of the opportunity for publication. The Chapter began discussions with the Indianapolis Medical Society (IMS) which is the only local society with a monthly publication, the Bulletin. Their arrangement to annually publish the abstracts submitted was mutually beneficial because IMS was interested in publishing articles with greater scientific focus and the chapter would fulfill a need of the Associates to publish their work. The abstracts are judged by the Governor and three internal medicine residency program directors. To provide the peer review, the abstract judges return written feedback to abstract submitters. Once the recommended changes are incorporated, abstract submitters returned to the Indiana Associates Council chair who collates the abstracts and forwards them to the Indianapolis Medical Society for publication. The publication of Indiana Associate abstracts has been a success. Prior to the publication of abstracts, the Chapter received roughly a dozen abstracts a year. Since 2001, when the Indianapolis Medical Society agreed to publish the Chapter's Associates abstracts, the number of abstracts submitted each year has increased three-fold.
