Scott R. Wilson, DO, FACP
2008 Iowa Chapter Laureate Awardee
Dr. Wilson was born in Englewood, New Jersey, and spent his early years in both New Jersey and Connecticut. He attended Fairfield University, in Fairfield, Connecticut—in sight of the Long Island Sound. He was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honor Society and received a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1981. He then taught Biology at Christian Heritage School in Trumbull, Connecticut for one year.
Dr. Wilson moved to Iowa in 1982 to attend the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines. Here he was a member of the Osteopathic Honor Society and graduated in 1986 with Doctor of Osteopathy degree. From 1986-1987, he did a one year rotating internship at Des Moines General Hospital. In 1987 he started an Internal Medicine Residency at University of Wisconsin in Madison. Although on a Primary Care track, he signed up for all electives in the multidisciplinary Trauma-Life Care Intensive Care Unit and completed the residency in 1990.
In 1990, Dr. Wilson moved back to Iowa, joined a private practice in Des Moines, and married his wife, Lisa, a Social Worker in the public schools.
He worked for 10 years at Diagnostic and Critical Care Medicine, a hospital based General Internal Medicine practice. He spent half the time in a clinic practice doing Primary Care, and half the time caring for ill and injured adults in Des Moines’ five private hospitals. He was an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Des Moines University—Osteopathic Medicine Center from 1992-1996 and Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor from 1996-2000.
In 2000, the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine appointed him Clinical Assistant Professor and recruited him as Director to lead the Hospitalist Program. In 2002, he was appointed Associate Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine. He was then appointed Clinical Associate Professor in 2003. Over the years, the hospitalist program has grown from one to thirteen physicians. Hospitalists staff the inpatient General Medicine service, and the Surgical Co-management Service.
Dr. Wilson has taught extensively at Des Moines University while he practiced in Des Moines and at Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City since 2000. His teaching activities include classroom and clinical teaching. He received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Internal Medicine residents during his first year on faculty and he was nominated for the M4 Teacher of the Year award in 2004. He chairs the Hospitalist Curriculum Task Force, and has served on the Ambulatory Curriculum Review Committee. He participated in the Teaching Scholars Program from 2003-2006, and has presented local and regional CME talks.
He is an active Midwest Council member in the Society of Hospital Medicine, and has served as facilitator at their Leadership Academy. He has appointments on many University Committees, including House Staff Evaluation Committee, Interdisciplinary Discharge Planning Sub-committee, Grand Rounds Committee, Triage Process Committee (Chairman), Mentoring Junior Faculty, Carver College of Medicine Honor Council, Inpatient Standards of Care (Co-Chairman), Baldrige Award/Process Management Team.
He has memberships in the Society of General Internal Medicine, Society of Hospital Medicine, and has been an active member in the American College of Physicians since 1987, serving as Treasurer of the Iowa Chapter since 2003. He was appointed to Fellowship in 2006 and he has presented regional CME talks to the Iowa Chapter.
Dr. Wilson’s busy schedule is made possible by his wife Lisa, who, he says, runs a catering service, bed and breakfast, taxi and laundry service for her family, is on call 24/7 for 365 days per year—all of which, he assures, is much more difficult than her previous job as a Social Worker in public schools.
Dr. Wilson has done medical work on short term missions to Thailand, Romania, and Honduras as well as additional missions to Hungary, Mexico, and the former USSR.
When off the clock, Dr. Wilson enjoys his duties as Assistant Scoutmaster for local Boy Scout Troop 212 in Iowa City. He has great memories of climbing Mount Shauvano — a 14,229 foot peak in the Sawatch mountains of central Colorado — with his son Blake. Additionally, he “runs to kids games and dance events.”
Dr. Wilson is an avid woodsmith and especially enjoys sailing the wooden sailboat he built with the help of many friends and family. He continues to do woodworking with a special interest in buying tools.
