2005 Evergreen Award Winner
The Iowa Chapter received the 2005 Evergreen Award for the following program:
Medical Student Recruitment & Mentoring Project
The Iowa Chapter initiated a program to increase medical student attendance and participation at the annual Chapter Scientific Meeting. This effort has been successful in recruiting more students to join ACP and has greatly increased student involvement in the chapter. The program involved working with the Internal Medicine Internal Group (IMIG) at the state's two medical schools. The Interest Groups worked with the Governor and Council to plan activities of particular interest to students and to get students involved in two of the specific meeting program activities: presenting patients during "Stump the Professor" and competing in Medical Jeopardy. The chapter also hosted an evening program giving medical students the opportunity to speak with residency program directors and group practice physician leaders. During the last half-day session, a mentoring brunch was held, where students were assigned to tables with a resident, fellow, academic physician and physician in private practice. These efforts have been very successful in recruiting more students to join the chapter (a 54% increase in student members over the past 5 years) and greater participation of students at the chapter meeting (a fourfold increase in students attending the 2004 meeting).
