December 6, 2010

Fellow ACP Members:

I wanted to send you all Holiday greetings from your lame-duck Governor. Happy Holidays! However and wherever you celebrate, remember to reflect on how priviledged we are to practice our profession for the betterment of others.

Hospitalists, and anyone who has a hospital practice, should plan to join us for a review of the 2009 & 2010 ABIM Hospital Medicine SEP modules right after the conclusion of our March meeting. The Chapter meeting will conclude at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 26 and the SEP sessions will run from 1-3 and 3:30-5:30 in 2117 MERF, the same room as the Chapter meeting. Keep your eyes open for the meeting and SEP registration materials. You can register right along with your meeting registatration.

All 25 questions in each module will be reviewed. The discussions will be facilitated by ACP chapter memebers with active, busy hospital practices: Brian Daniel, MD; Chris Dyer, MD, FACP; Peter Kaboli, MD, FACP; and Scott Wilson, DO, FACP. The answers can be submitted for credit towards ABIM SEP requirements for Maintenance of Certification. You need to be separately enrolled in the ABIM program to submit scores. Remember, if your enrollement date for ABIM Maintenance of Certification is anytime in the previous 10 years prior to submitting the scores, you do not need an additional ABIM registration fee--even if you have completed MOC in the interim. These results can count towards your next MOC process.

The Board of Regents recently responded to a policy statement by the Institute of Medicine regarding the future of nursing practice. I think that each of us should review comments of the ACP BOR as they address health care planning issues that will eventually affect all of us. You can find the BOR response on the ACP website.

Keep warm and drive safely this winter. Please let me know how I can help you.

Dick LeBlond, MD, MACP
Governor, Iowa ACP Chapter
