ACP Honors Hawaii Chapter with an Evergreen Award
At the 2010 Internal Medicine Meeting, ACP presented ten Evergreen Awards and two Special Recognition Awards to honor Chapters that created new programs that strengthened the chapter and increased member communication and involvement.
The Hawaii Chapter received the 2010 Evergreen Award for their U.H. John A. Burns School of Medicine Internal Medicine Interest Group. Here is a brief description of the chapter's effort.
The University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine Internal Medicine Interest Group (UH JABSOM IMIG) was founded in spring 2006 as a joint effort among UH JABSOM, UH Department of Medicine and the ACP Hawaii Chapter. IMIG officers work closely with the IMIG faculty advisor, UH Department of Medicine and the ACP Hawaii Chapter leadership. Its existence has helped to maintain or increase student interest in Internal Medicine. Activities have included participation in the Transition to Clerkship Week, IMIG booth at the Annual JABSOM Activitiesí Fair, Residency Interview Workshop, and the development of an IMIG Web site. These activities, and many more, present medical students an increased awareness of career opportunities in Internal Medicine and subspecialties as well as assist in providing educational opportunities for students outside of the classroom and clinical rotations. UH JABSOM IMIG has become a recognizable student group at the medical school and between 75 and 85% of all medical students at UH JABSOM are student members of the ACP. Since the founding of the IMIG, 20 - 36% of each graduating class has matched to Categorical Medicine, which is comparable or better than the national average of 20% of all graduating medical school classes.
