The Florida Chapter received the 2003 Evergreen Award for the following program:
Acquiring the Tools for Effective Advocacy: Key Contact at the Grassroots Level Seminar
The Florida Chapter developed and hosted an innovative seminar at their Chapter meeting to educate their membership on advocacy issues and how to become effective spokespersons for their fellow physicians and patients. The Florida Chapter utilized the expertise of national health care leaders and state and national elected officials to bring this challenge to life. Members were presented with the Chapter's legislative agenda and advocacy techniques, such as face-to-face lobbying, letter writing, and e-mail options. In addition, members were provided information on who their legislator was and how to contact them. As a result of the seminar, 115 members signed up as Key Contacts for the upcoming legislative year and are better equipped to effectively communicate with their legislators on behalf of internal medicine.
