Medical Student Committee
Barry Wu, M.D., Chair

Summer 2004

The Connecticut Chapter was well represented at the Annual Meeting in New Orleans in April. Stephen A. Atlas, MD and Barry J. Wu, MD, FACP organized a session for medical students titled "Interactive Board Review for Students". Students used an audience response system to enhance their medical knowledge and test-taking skills. The meeting was also highlighted by reuniting with former ACP medical students from Yale; Caroline Harada, MD is starting a geriatric fellowship at the University of Chicago and Andrea Ciaranello, MD is beginning her chief resident year at the University of California Davis Medical Center.

We are encouraged that Connecticut students continue to pursue careers in internal medicine. This year 27 of 107 graduating students from Yale University and 15 of 67 from the University of Connecticut matched to internal medicine residencies. This was the sixth year the Connecticut ACP Internal Medicine Award was given at graduation to students entering a Connecticut internal medicine program. The recipients were chosen based on their academic achievement and community service. This year's winners were Rina Reyes-Garcia, MD from Yale University and Kevin Baran, MD from the University of Connecticut. Both are now acclimated to internship in the Primary Care Program at Yale.

We look ahead to the Sixth Annual Medical School Board Review Tournament. This event will be held in October at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. We were delighted last year to have a team from Connecticut repeat not only as NCAA Women's Basketball Champions, but also as ACP Medical School Board Review Tournament winners. This was the first year a medical school team repeated as champions. Previous tournament winners included: 1999 New Jersey Medical School, 2000 New York Medical School, 2001 SUNY Downstate, 2002 and 2003 University of Connecticut. We look forward to continuing to support this effort to enhance student participation and exposure to the ACP in the Northeast.

I am grateful for the unwavering support of Dean Nancy Angoff (Yale) and Dr. Ellen Nestler (University of Connecticut). If you are interested in partcipating on this committee, please contact me at bwu@srhs.org.
