ACP Honors Connecticut Chapter with an Evergreen Award and Special Recognition Award
At this year's Internal Medicine Meeting, ACP presented fifteen Evergreen Awards to honor Chapters that created new programs that strengthened the chapter and increased member communication and involvement.
The Connecticut Chapter received the 2007 Evergreen Award for their Norwalk Hospital Associates Chapter. Here is a brief description of the chapters' effort.
In order to create a more personal approach to reaching out to residents, the Connecticut Chapter formed an ACP Associates Chapter at a local residency program. The creation of a local Associates Chapter has provided a forum for residents to present innovative ideas to their peers as well as learn about the role and benefits of ACP membership. In addition, they have implemented a variety of community service projects, such as health fairs, volunteering to serve at the local homeless shelter's soup kitchen, and numerous fundraising activities. The Connecticut Chapter also negotiated with the residency program to provide a free year of membership to their residents. This lead to 100% participation in ACP membership. Through the local Associates Chapter, the benefits of membership have become much more tangible and interest in the organization has increased significantly.
Also, the Connecticut Chapter received a Special Recognition Award for their Yale Internal Medicine Interest Group. Here is a brief description of the chapters' effort.
The Yale Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG) is a student-run organization with a vision to enhance ACP student membership, aid students in exploring internal medicine as a career choice, provide mentoring, and improve communication between medical students, and ACP physicians. The IMIG is led by second-year medical students, with guidance from senior medical students entering internal medicine, as well as faculty. A variety of activities are initiated by the students, including publicity at the beginning of the school year to enlist students, a formal informational meeting, lectures and panel discussions on health care policy and careers in internal medicine, educational activities including a board review tournament, and participation at the annual meeting. Students are able to enhance their communication with ACP physicians by participation on the Governor's Council, and are also provided opportunities to address members at the annual state meeting. By empowering the students, they have been impressive examples to their peers in fostering active participation and exposure to internal medicine and the ACP.
