Associates Conference
Scott Wolf, D.O., Chair
The transition from residency into practice can be a stressful period, marked by confusion and uncertainty. What type of practice should I look for? Where is the best market? Negotiating a contract…Where do I begin? Forget all that, how do I secure an interview? The third annual Connecticut Chapter ACP Annual Associates Educational Conference set out to address these concerns. Taking place once again at Hartford Hospital's Education Resource Center, approximately 65 residents from training programs statewide attended what turned out to be an extremely informative session.
The day commenced with opening remarks and a heartfelt welcome from Scott Wolf, DO, MPH, FACP, Program Chair and the Associates Advisor. He then welcomed Mr. Patrick Molloy, President of Molloy and Co. who presented a thorough overview of planning your entry into medical practice. He clarified issues such as "buy in", malpractice insurance, and various practice arrangements, just to name a few. Lorna Lindsey, Director of Academic Affairs at Comphealth followed with a wonderful and practical approach to CV preparation and the all-important interview. Helpful hints such as placing a mirror in front of you during a phone interview, dress code and body language, and lets not forget the thank you note, were presented. Mike Wiley, president of Healthcare Management and Consulting Services, highlighted the morning session. Off the podium and into the audience, Mr. Wiley created real time scenarios for the attendees to ponder and respond. I think everyone is more prepared to sign on the dotted line after this discussion.
Lunch followed on this beautiful afternoon in May. Dr Greg Warren presented a brief update on the happenings in the ACP and Keirston Doyle, our liaison to the National ACP, welcomed the group and encouraged all to get involved.
The day ended with the honor of Dr Jerome Kassirer, Master of the ACP and past editor of the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr Kassirer put away his computer and sat amongst the attendees and conducted an informal yet lively discussion on the role of the pharmaceutical industry in medicine. It was a cherished opportunity to simply chat with someone as accomplished as Dr Kassirer. I think he enjoyed it as much as we did.
The reviews were extremely positive and we all look forward to our next associates meeting.
