Vision Statement
Beyond its role as an important region of the American College of Physicians, the Ontario Chapter has been an important vehicle for education linking the academe with community practice. The Chapter needs to maintain and expand this key role for both practicing internists and trainees. The Ontario Chapter also needs to remain relevant to Ontario fellows in regards to issues important to them in their practice. Thus, we need to maintain and expand our links to Ontario/Canadian organizations relevant to the practice of medicine- including the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine and the Ontario Medical Association.

Daniel J. Klass

Daniel Klass, (BA, BSc Med, MDCM, FRCP(C), FACP) is Senior Medical Officer in the Quality Management Division at The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and Adjunct Professor in Faculties of Health or Medicine at the Universities of Manitoba, Toronto, and York, in Canada, and at Griffiths University in Queensland, Australia. He is a medical graduate of McGill University, and also trained at the Universities of California (San Francisco), Manitoba and Oxford. In addition to 40 years of clinical work and bedside teaching in medicine, Dr. Klass has worked and done research in the fields of pulmonary physiology and medical education. Since 1980 he has specialized in fostering innovation in performance assessment, curriculum design and programs for International Medical Graduates; first in Manitoba, from 1980 to 1989, where he was Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medicine, then, from 1989-2000, in Philadelphia, at the National Board of Medical Examiners where he was the Director of the project that introduced standardized patient examinations into the United States Medical Licensure Examinations (USMLE), and the University of Pennsylvania where he was Co-Director of an innovative Pulmonary Fellows continuity clinic, and finally, in Ontario from 2000 to 2007, as Director, Quality Management Division, at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. While at the College, Dr. Klass has worked to ensure a strong educational focus for medical regulation in the province of Ontario, and to improve Ontario’s capacity to license internationally trained physicians.

Vision Statement
I have been privileged in my career to have practiced in four countries; Canada (MB, ON), the United States (PA, CA), the UK and Israel. Thus I have been acutely aware of differences in geography, politics and social climate that influence the day to day practice of medicine. Mobility has been a cherished value and fact of life for doctors. From Maimonides to Osler and Freud, our leaders have been peripatetic, and medical students of all ages have crossed boundaries to further their learning. My idea, if elected governor, would be to make the ACP Chapter a favored resource to enhance an international perspective in today’s practice. Wennberg’s approach to understanding regional variation optimizes management by removing local and individual bias from medical decision making. I would encourage ACP members to examine issues of medical regulation, health care systems and condition management through the lens of international and regional variation.
