Governor’s Letter: The Sophomore Report
Now in my sophomore year as your Governor I do feel like I am acquiring some skills in meshing the needs of Ontario members with the mandate of a prototypical American professional society—although still learning the ropes on how to navigate a system geared more to maintaining professional standards/working conditions for US internists than to catering to the educational, networking needs of Canadian members.
Notwithstanding the challenges, I am pleased that we have continued to make progress on several fronts in the chapter- especially related to our outreach to medical students and associates and in our collaboration with the CSIM in regards to our next annual chapter meeting.
ACP Club Update
Based on the priority of reaching out to our more junior members, in 2012 we initiated an effort to establish ACP clubs in each of the seven Ontario medical schools. We have made some progress. Clubs have been/are being established at Western, McMaster and Queen’s with at least one meeting having been held in London and in Kingston. The goal of these clubs is to provide an opportunity for ACP members from medical student to master to get together over areas of mutual interest. In London the focus will be on discussions/lectures related to health care systems and global health. Additionally we will use these sessions as an opportunity for our Doctor’s Dilemma team to hone its skills.
Our goal in 2013 is to establish ACP clubs in all Ontario medical schools. To achieve this goal, there is a call out for volunteers for student and associate leaders as well as Faculty mentors in NOSM, Ottawa, Western and Windsor to help establish ACP clubs in these locations. Please let me know if you are interested. Contact: Ross Feldman, MD, FACP

2013 Joint Meeting with the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine
In 2013, ACP Ontario will be meeting in conjunction with CSIM at their annual meeting held this year in Toronto October 2-5. Beyond the CSIM’s very extensive program, ACP Ontario will continue our new tradition of the Governor’s Lecture/Laureate Award session. Additionally, we will continue to host our Doctor’s Dilemma competition with hopefully an increased number of teams vying for a spot in the ACP national meeting completion at IM14. Stay tuned for upcoming information regarding registration and abstract submissions. As we did last year the chapter will provide travel support for all trainees presenting their interesting cases/scientific findings at the meeting.
Laureate Awards 2013
The Laureate Award is designed to honor those Fellows and Masters of the College who have demonstrated, by their example and conduct, an abiding commitment to excellence in medical care, education, research, and service to their community, their chapter, and the ACP. A Laureate Nominee is usually a senior physician who has:
- been a Fellow or Master of the College for at least 15 to 20 years
- a long history of excellence and peer approval in the specialty of internal medicine and/or
- served the chapter or community with distinction or in some clearly definable manner.
In 2013 we are planning to award 2 Laureate medals. One medal will focus on candidates having made significant scientific contributions and the other on candidates making significant contributions to the ACP.
Nominations due by April 15, 2013
Please consider nominating a candidate. Send your nomination letter along with the candidate’s CV before April 15.
