Atlantic Provinces Chapter Governor
Walter F Schlech, III MD FACP
Dr. Schlech is a Professor and Head of the Infectious Disease Division of the Department of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax. He assumed the office of Governor in April, 2006, and will serve a four-year term.
Dr. Schlech achieved his BA from Williams College in 1971 and his MD from Cornell in 1975. He trained in Internal Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock and Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt. He served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the CDC 1980-82. He became a Fellow of the ACP in 1983 and was a member of the chapter's Executive Committee from 1988-1992.
Dr. Schlech has served as Head, Division of Infectious Diseases from 1992-93 and was a member of the National Advisory Committee on AIDS 1985-92. He also was President of the Canadian Infectious Diseases Society 1988-90, Member; National Advisory Committee on Immunizations 1996-2000; Elder, First Congregational Church, Ark Outreach Ministries; Trainer in HIV Medicine, Academic Alliance on AIDS Care and Prevention in Africa, Kampala, Uganda 2003 and Emmanuel Hospital Association, North India 2004. He is a member of the Research Committee, Infectious Diseases Society of America since 2003 and was a member of the CDC Advisory Committee on HIV, STD, and TB from 1992-2000. His primary area of interest is in infectious diseases and HIV medicine.
