Vision Statement
We must re-identify internists as thoughtful diagnosticians, not 15 minute PCP’s. Internal Medicine needs to speak as one voice. Subspecialists need to understand that ACP is the key to their future, such as fighting the annual battle to void the annual automatic Medicare cutbacks. I will work to provide physicians who volunteer their skills to the underserved with state sponsored malpractice insurance. I will identify and reorganize the prior leaders of Northern California’s ASIM to strengthen our voice in Sacramento and Washington, DC. There are many problems facing the practicing internist, including pay for performance (quality is important but is this the solution?), recertification (recertification is not negotiable but the mechanism to achieve it can be simplified), influence of pharma on medical practice (for instance: can we get the ads off TV?), and the role of the internist who wishes to follow his or her patient when hospitalized.
