2012 John Tooker Evergreen Award Winner

The Arizona Chapter
received a 2012 Evergreen Award
for the following program:

Developing a Statewide ACP Arizona Medical Student Committee

In 2009, after many years of solid participation from the Internal Medicine Interest Groups at medical schools across the state, the Arizona Chapter decided to form a Medical Student Committee. One of the main areas of focus for the committee has been the creation of a state-wide journal club. The journal engages medical students from all medical schools in the state around a medical topic of interest and to share basic science and clinical science updates with each other in the presence of faculty mentors who can serve as content experts, resources and mentors. Students learn how to approach a research paper in a systematic, structured manner, how to present in a formal journal club setting, and how to address questions. Students also gain experience in managing an event as they take turns in hosting the journal club. Additionally, students have increased their comfort using videoconferencing since the journal club is held via the Arizona Telemedicine Program. The journal club has been a successful initiative for the Medical Student Committee and they are now looking at potential next projects to continue strengthening the bond between medical students across Arizona.
