Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Teacher Award of the American College of Physicians

Established: 1997

The award is bestowed upon a Member, Fellow, or Master of the College who has consistently volunteered his or her services to teach medical students and residents. This individual should have demonstrated outstanding teaching prowess, displayed exemplary characteristics of care and concern for individual patients at the bedside, and served as a role model and mentor. His or her qualities as a distinguished teacher should have been recognized previously, for example, by teaching awards or citations from the nominee’s institution, medical students or residents, or the local ACP chapter.

The recipient of this award shall be a volunteer teacher. He or she should have a clinical faculty appointment at an accredited medical school. The recipient may be a general internist or in a subspecialty of internal medicine.

The Awards Committee encourages supporting letters from ACP Resident/Fellow members, former students, and residents and should identify the nature of the student-teacher relationship between the supporter and nominee.

Nominating and supporting letters should address:

  • How much time does the nominee devote to volunteer teaching of medical students and residents?
  • What made the teaching by the nominee memorable/outstanding and more effective compared to other teachers in your experience?
  • How have the characteristics of the nominee that have made him/her a role model influenced your own clinical practice and teaching?
  • Based on your observations of the nominee’s interactions with patients, what is his/her their approach to (or philosophy) of patient care?
